What to Wear for Your Photography Session (And What to Avoid)

Choosing what to wear for your photo session can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to be. Thoughtful outfit choices can help your images feel timeless, cohesive, and flattering while allowing your family’s personality to shine.

At SugarSnap Photography by Jen Strode, I guide clients through the styling process so they can arrive feeling prepared and confident.

Here is how to keep it simple and stress-free.

Family photo session styling tips for clients planning portraits with SugarSnap Photography in Spring Grove, PA.

1. Start with Coordination, Not Matching

Instead of dressing everyone in the exact same outfit, choose a coordinated color palette. Two to four complementary colors often work beautifully and create a polished look without feeling too uniform.

This approach adds visual interest while still keeping the focus on your connection as a family.

2. Choose Timeless Over Trendy

Classic styles, soft textures, and neutral or muted tones tend to age well in photographs. While trends can be fun, they may distract from the overall look or feel dated later on.

When in doubt, choose pieces you would still love years from now.

3. Avoid Distracting Elements

Some wardrobe choices can take attention away from the people in the photo. It is best to avoid:

  • Large logos or graphics
  • Neon colors
  • Overly busy or bold patterns

Simple, well-chosen clothing helps your portraits feel more refined and timeless.

4. Consider the Location

Your surroundings should help guide your wardrobe. Natural outdoor settings around Spring Grove, York, Hanover, Gettysburg, Lancaster, and Harrisburg often pair well with soft, earthy tones. For studio sessions, structured outfits and classic layers can create a polished look.

The goal is for your wardrobe to complement the environment, not compete with it.

5. Comfort Is Key

If you feel uncomfortable, it will show in your expressions and body language. Choose clothing that fits well and allows you to move naturally, especially for sessions with children, maternity portraits, or extended family interactions.

When you feel good, you look more relaxed and confident.

6. Final Tip: Try It On First

Do not wait until the day of your session to decide everything. Try on outfits ahead of time to make sure they coordinate well, fit properly, and photograph the way you expect.

A little preparation can make your session smoother and more enjoyable from start to finish.
