How Far In Advance Should I Book My Photography Session?

By: SugarSnap Photography by Jen Strode

One of the most common questions families ask is, “How far in advance should I book my session?” The answer can vary depending on the type of session you’re planning, the season, and how flexible your schedule is — but in general, earlier is always better!

At SugarSnap Photography, many sessions book weeks or even months ahead, especially during busy seasons like fall and the holidays. Booking early helps guarantee your preferred date and gives plenty of time to plan outfits, themes, and all the little details that make your session special.

When to Book Your Newborn Session?

Booking early with a Spring Grove photographer helps families in York County prepare for a polished portrait experience.

Newborn sessions should ideally be booked during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. Since babies arrive on their own schedule, reserving your spot ahead of time ensures availability once your little one arrives. The actual session is usually scheduled within the first 2-3 weeks after birth when babies are still sleepy and curly.

When to Book Your Maternity Session?

Maternity sessions are typically photographed between 28-34 weeks. Booking at least 1-2 months in advance allows enough time for wardrobe planning and scheduling before those final uncomfortable weeks of pregnancy.

A well-planned portrait session with a professional photographer in Spring Grove, PA starts with early communication and scheduling.

When to Book Your Family Session?

Family sessions, especially outdoor fall sessions, tend to fill quickly. Booking 2-3 months ahead is recommended if you want prime dates during peak foliage or holiday card season.

When to Book Your Cake Smash or Milestone Session?

For milestone and cake smash sessions, booking about 1-2 months ahead works best. This gives time to plan custom themes, outfits, decorations, and cakes to create a truly one-of-a-kind setup.

When to Book Your Senior Session?

Most seniors book their session anywhere from 2-6 months in advance depending on the season they want. Fall is one of the busiest times for senior photography because of the beautiful colors and mild weather, so those dates tend to fill very quickly.

If you want:

  • Fall leaves → book in summer
  • Spring flowers → book in winter
  • Summer golden fields → book in spring

Booking early gives you the best selection of dates and plenty of time to plan outfits, locations, and details that make your session unique.

Last Minute Sessions

Sometimes life moves quickly, and last-minute openings do happen! Never hesitate to reach out and ask about availability. If there’s room on the calendar, I’ll always do my best to fit your family in.

Photographs capture moments that pass by far too quickly. Planning ahead helps make the entire experience relaxed, stress-free, and enjoyable from start to finish.

If you’re thinking about booking a session, now is always the perfect time to start the conversation. I would love to help create something beautiful and unique for your family!

At SugarSnap Photography by Jen Strode, Jennifer provides a polished and professional experience for families, newborns, maternity clients, children, seniors, and select events. If you are ready to begin planning your session in Spring Grove, PA, now is the right time to get started.
