This old image is FAR from perfect, but it tells a wonderful story of my incredible father. My dad recently passed away and I miss him very much! I have been looking through boxes and boxes of old photos and I ran across this one. My photographer brain wants so badly to clean it up or even toss it, however this image really is perfectly imperfect!
I could remove the distracting white hanky, but my dad used to always carry one with him. I would get him new ones each Christmas.
I could remove the coffee stain on his shirt, but coffee ran in his veins; and now it runs through mine.
The blurry crooked image reminds me of how far I have come taking pictures.
As a child, I often found myself captivated by the magic that lay within the lens of a camera. My father, an amateur photographer, was my first teacher and my biggest inspiration. He had an uncanny ability to see beauty in the mundane, capturing moments that spoke volumes without uttering a single word.
Growing up, our weekends were often spent on our sailing and later crusing around the San Francisco Bay. My father would bring along his camera, a classic film model that I cherished. He would meticulously set up his shots, teaching me the importance of perspective, light, and composition. I remember time and again, being wide-eyed and mesmerized as he clicked away, creating everlasting memories from fleeting moments.
My journey into photography officially began when I received my first camera from my father on my tenth birthday. It was a simple point-and-shoot, but to me, it felt like a treasure. With it, I started documenting everything around me—from flowers blooming in the spring to my friends’ laughter during our summer picnics. My father’s guidance became invaluable as he helped me understand the technical aspects of photography, such as framing and exposure.
Photography quickly became a game for me. I would curate mini photo shoots, experimenting with angles and lighting. At first, I captured what I thought was beautiful, but as I honed my skills, I learned to express emotions through my photographs. Each click of the shutter captured not only an image but also a piece of my heart.
As I grew older, my passion for photography blossomed. I began pouring over books and online tutorials, eager to absorb every bit of knowledge I could find. My father was always there to support me, sharing his own experiences.
With every photo I took, I started uncovering my unique style. I developed an affinity for capturing candid moments—those raw emotions that make life so beautiful. Unlike posed photos, candid shots reveal the true essence of a moment, and I found a sense of joy in freezing time, showcasing the beauty and reality of life.
Today, as I hold my professional camera, I am grateful for the foundation my father laid for me. His passion for photography ignited a flame within me that continues to burn brightly. I am now more than just a photographer; I am a storyteller, weaving tales through my images.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize that photography is not just a hobby—it's a part of who I am, a reflection of my experiences and emotions. And I owe it all to my father, whose love for the art form inspired me to pursue my dreams and find beauty in every moment.
